Day One: Principles of Civil Design

Competency Description: The difference between civil and structural engineering and the difference between real estate and oil and gas sectors.

Day Two: Concrete and Steel Structure

Competency Description: The different structure system for concrete and steel structures; how to choose the best structure system.

  • To know the principal of members behavior
  • The difference between the codes
  • How to choose the suitable system

Topics to be Covered:

  • Basic concept of concrete and steel design
  • Basic concept and types of pre-stressed concrete
  • Forces in the members and its behaviour
  • Effect of different loads on the building.
  • Comparison Between different structural systems
  • Overview of using the suitable structure system
  • Different structure system in steel projects
  • Principal, limitations for different codes (EC, ACI, BS codes)
  • Case study: Complete steel structure project
  • CASE STUDY for flare pipeline project

Day Three: Foundations Types

Competency Description: The different types of foundation will present in this course and the main concept of foundation design will be discussed. The loads for different facilities in oil and gas plant will be discussed.

  • Foundations types
  • How to choose the best foundation type
  • Loads form tanks, separator, heater, piperack.
  • Types of pile
  • Principal of pile design

  • Loads in oil and gas industry
  • Loads from tanks, piperack, pressure vessel

  • Basic Concept of foundation design
  • Types of foundation
  • Shallow foundation
  • Foundation under machines

  • CASE STUDY: for foundation under reciprocating Machine

Day Four: Geotechnical and Survey Activity

Competency Description: The soil test and geotechnical investigation in general will be discussed for buildings and road design and provide rule of thumb for these activities.

  • Types of soil test
  • How to define the soil investigation scope
  • How to define the survey scope
  • The laboratory and onsite tests
  • Quick soil test for urgent decision

Day Five: Methods of Construction

Competency Description: The plant layout and the interface between the different disciplines. The principles of road design and the ways for best design.Key Behaviours:

  • Cost estimate for civil work
